How to Decide on House Plants

Before you purchase house plants for your home, you should look into the kind of care you’ll need to put into them.  Not everyone has a green thumb, so plants that are difficult to care for are not the best choice for everyone.

Here are some things you should look into before purchasing house plants for your home.

  • How much water the plant(s) need.  Some plants need to be watered every day.  Phalaenopsis orchid care, on the other hand, only requires that the plants be watered about once a week.  If you don’t think you’ll be able to water your plants every day, plants that require less water would probably be the best choice for you.
  • How much sunlight the plant(s) need.  Cymbidium care only requires that the orchids get mild sunlight.  Other plants might require direct sunlight, which means a lot of moving and strategically arranging the plant to put it in a sunny window.  Still other plants thrive in shady conditions.  Choose plants with sunlight requirements that are closest to what you can provide in your home.
  • What temperature the plant(s) should be kept at.  Some plants thrive at room temperature, while others might not.  For instance, orchid care for some orchids requires a warmer-than-normal temperature during the day (mid-70s to mid-80s) and a slightly cooler one at night.  Make sure the house plant you are getting is well suited for living in your home!

House plants can be an unwelcome guest if they have very particular needs.  Unless you are the type of person who enjoys your life being ruled by a plant, be sure to do your research before bringing a house plant into your home!
